Single yarn tensile strength test

2018-06-14

ISO 2062 and ASTM D2256 are common standards for tensile testing of yarns. These tests are used to determine the breaking force, elongation and toughness of the yarn; the breaking strength, the ratio of the breaking force to the yarn density. When assessing the strength of a yarn material, the yarn test sample must be clamped so that the machine loading channel aligns with the sample axis.

With capstan clamping, the machine loading channel can be quickly aligned with the sample axis. Changes in sharp edges or paths can lead to test failures. Capstan clamp helps to avoid this situation, it can reduce the probability of yarn encounter sharp change. Elongation properties are important in the application of yarn materials. The method commonly used in testing is to evenly distribute the load on the capstan, which can prevent the yarn from slipping.

ASTM and ISO have developed standard test methods for yarn breaking strength, elongation, toughness, modulus and toughness. Popular standards are the use of single strand yarn ASTM D2256 and single-end breaking force and elongation ISO 2062. Yarn tensile testing is usually conducted by low force, high elongation, constant tensile rate, bench tensile testing machine.ASTM D76 specifies requirements for the most widely used tensile testing machines for textiles, including constant tensile rate (CRE), constant velocity force and constant load rate (CRL) machines.
