Waterproof performance

When it comes to waterproof performance, most people think that it is the performance of fabrics against being wetted by water. In fact, waterproofness refers to the performance of fabrics against wetting and penetration by water.

The characteristic indicators of waterproof performance mainly include water level, hydrostatic pressure resistance level, water penetration resistance and so on.

Application of waterproof performance

Waterproof fabrics are mainly used in wind and raincoats, outdoor jackets, medical professional protective clothing, umbrellas, tents, sleeping bags, tarpaulins, etc.

Penetration resistance test

The penetration resistance test is to simulate the working environment of a windbreaker or rain gear, and to simulate the situation of spraying in rainy days;

The penetration resistance test is to evaluate the waterproof performance of textiles through the water penetration quality of the spray surface of the fabric;

The penetration resistance test method is divided into horizontal spray method and vertical spray method.

Main Test Criteria

AATCC 35-2018 Water repellency: Rain test

Test principle:

Put a weighed absorbent paper behind the sample, under certain conditions, spray the sample with water for 5 minutes and then re-weigh the absorbent paper to determine the amount of water penetrated by the sample during the test.

AATCC 35-2018 Water repellency: Rain test

Test steps:

1. Take at least 3 samples from the fabric, each with a size of 20cmx20cm

2. Weigh the standard absorbent paper to 0.1g and place it behind the sample;

3. Put the combined sample on the support and make it in the middle of the spray;

4. Spray the 27C test water level directly on the sample and continue to spray for 5min;

5. After the spraying is over, carefully remove the absorbent paper and quickly weigh again, accurate to 0.1g.

AATCC 42-2017 (E2019) Water repellency: Impact water permeability test

Test principle:

Put a piece of weighed absorbent paper behind the sample, spray a certain volume of water on the taut surface of the sample, and then re-weigh the absorbent paper to determine the impermeability of the sample.

AATCC 35-2018 Water repellency: Rain test

assessment:

1. The permeability of water is expressed by calculating the weight increase of the absorbent paper in the 5mim spray test. When the weight increase is greater than 5g, it can be directly recorded as ">5g";

2. In order to obtain the complete process of impermeability of single fabric or composite fabric, it can be reacted by the average permeability of nozzles under different pressures. Measure the maximum pressure without penetration when the pressure is increased by 300mm, the penetration change that occurs with each increase in pressure, and the penetration caused by the test.

AATCC 42-2017 (E2019) Water repellency: Impact water permeability test

Test steps:

1. Take at least 3 samples, each size is 178mmx330mm, and the length direction is the warp direction (the longitudinal direction of the fabric).

2. Clamp one end of the sample to the spring clip at the top of the inclined plane, and clamp the other end of the standard sample clamp to the free end of the sample.

3. Weigh the standard absorbent paper to the nearest 0.1g, then place it under the sample.

4. Pour 500ml of distilled water or deionized water or reverse osmosis water at 27°C into the funnel of the tester, and spray the water on the sample.

5. After the whole spraying, take out the absorbent paper carefully, and then quickly weigh again, accurate to 0.1g.

AATCC 42-2017 (E2019) Water repellency: Impact water permeability test

assessment:

Calculate the added weight of the absorbent paper to evaluate the water resistance of the sample;

If the test value is > 5g, it can be directly recorded as">5g".

Conclusion

Textile waterproof performance index, both at home and abroad have the corresponding test standards, the test principles of these standards are basically the same, can effectively assess the waterproof performance of textiles;

Because the waterproof principle is different, according to the different uses of the product or the characteristics of the product to choose the required test items;

The permeability test is to predict the permeability of the fabric against rain by measuring the permeability of the fabric against spray water. It is applicable to the fabric with strong waterproof performance. The result is represented by "g", and the result "> 5g" means that the fabric has no permeability resistance.
