Testing methods for air permeability, moisture permeability, hydrostatic pressure, waterproof and other properties of textiles

Textile production and production process are relatively complex, people wear clothing is actually through countless processes will be transformed from cotton or yarn into fabric products, among which there are as many as hundreds of textile clothing detection categories, such as textile detection including shrinkage, fading, permeability, heat preservation.....  And other testing items, here is a simple explanation of the hydrostatic pressure, moisture permeability, air permeability, waterproof and other performance testing methods for textiles:

1. Method Air permeability (MAP) :

Means the ability of air to pass through fabric;  Under the condition of the specified pressure difference, the airflow flow through the sample vertically in a given area within a certain time is measured, and the air permeability is calculated.  The flow rate can be measured directly or converted by measuring the pressure on both sides of the flow aperture.  This is breathable in the real sense!

Test standard: ASTM D737, ISO 9237, JIS L1096;

The permeability unit can be expressed in mm/s or CM3 /cm2/s.

2, Moisture Proofness shorthand: MP

The moisture permeability is expressed in unit g/m2/24h, which means that under certain standard laboratory conditions, a specific humidity difference is formed on both sides of the sample, and water vapor enters the dry side through the sample. By measuring the change of the weight of the moisture permeability cup with time, the water vapor permeability and other parameters of the sample can be obtained.

There are two test methods for moisture permeability: full cup and inverted cup;

Cup method: ASTM E96 A, C, E;  JIS L1099 A1.

Pouring method: ASTM-E96, JIS L1099B1;

This test uses pre-wash data!

Domestic outdoor practitioners and outdoor enthusiasts all call moisture permeability permeability, or directly call moisture permeability permeability. It is incorrect and inaccurate to mix these two words together. Air permeability and moisture permeability are completely two different concepts, which need to be different and correctly understood.

3. Water pressure (WP) :

Outdoor fabric industry used to be called water pressure resistance, expressed in mmH2O, refers to the strong pressure per unit area, under standard laboratory conditions, the fabric bears the pressure of distilled water spraying up, and record the water pressure value, such as water pressure 5000mmH2O, that unit area can bear at least 5m pressure without leakage.

Common test standard: AATCC 127;  JIS L1092B;  IS0 811.

Water pressure test can be divided into two methods:

1, wash before test: domestic outdoor brands generally test the water pressure resistance value before washing, unexpected value after washing, wash a few times after the water pressure resistance value decreased greatly, may drop 1000-3000mmH2O or so;

2. Test after washing:  Foreign outdoor brands are generally tested water pressure after 5 times of water washing, THENORTHFACE even has used water washing 20 times after testing water pressure resistance method, because of many tests after washing, water pressure resistance value drop is very large, such a test method is any coating factory or film compound factory must use better material processing,  For example, the water pressure resistance of the coated fabric requires 5 times of washing up to 5000mmH2O, then at least to 7-8000mmH2O before washing;

4, anti-splashing water:

Under the standard laboratory, distilled water was sprayed on the sample through a funnel, and the standard waterproof sample was scored and rated.

Commonly used test criteria are: AATCC 22;  ISO 4920;

There are three kinds of anti-splash water:

The Durable WaterRepellent (W /R), Durable WaterRepellent (DWR) and TEFLON will both wear WaterRepellent and wear WaterRepellent.

1, W/R: don't wash clothes several times surface waterproof, general outdoor leisure ordinary waterproof, if often go hiking or have a certain altitude of the mountain, the mountain weather is fickle, is likely to rain at any time, ordinary waterproof, waterproof clothing washing several times due to surface will get wet clothes, wearing can increase body weight.

2, DWR: Japan Daikin carbon 6 waterproof, wash 20 times to maintain the effect of 80 points (European standard 3);  Carbon 8 used to be waterproof and could achieve 80 points after 30 washes, but it has been banned by the EU because the fluoride content does not meet the EU standard.

3. TEFLON, produced by DuPont in the United States, is very well-known and has three protection effects, such as waterproof, anti-fouling and anti-oil, which is relatively expensive. If you buy this brand of waterproof, you can provide TEFLON tags, but TEFLON's disadvantage is not as good as Carbon 8 and carbon 6.
